Peppermint Oil For Headaches

Posted by Marcia Chase on

Are headaches impacting your life?

Do you change your plans regularly because you have a headache? Are you looking for a natural way to treat your headaches? Peppermint is one of the most widely used essential oils sold today. Using Peppermint Essential Oil for headaches is a simple way to treat migraines, tension headaches, hormone related headaches and sinus headaches.

I having been using essential oils for 19 years. I will talk a bit about what an essential oil is. Why you want to choose a good quality essential oil. And some of the many ways you can use them to treat your headaches. Remember to consult your Doctor for medical advice.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing easily evaporated chemical compounds from plants.  They do not sit on the surface of the skin; they soak through and go right into the blood stream. This is why it is so important to use high quality essential oils. It’s also why they have the power to alter the way we feel in such a short period of time.

Choosing a high-quality essential oil. Many Essential oils contain chemicals so you want to do what you can to make sure you are getting a pure essential oil. Young Living and Doterra are widely considered to be the best. When I got started with young living back in 2000, Dottera did not exist. I will refer back to Young Living oils the most because that is where I got started with aromatherapy. There are many companies to choose from, do a bit of research about the quality of the oils. Applying essential oils “neat”

Applying essential oils “neat” refers to the use of essential oils where you put the oil directly onto the skin without prior dilution with a carrier oil. Peppermint has a cooling sensation when you apply it to the skin. Diluting with a carrier oil will give you a chance to get use to peppermint oil and to see how sensitive your skin is to it. Carrier oils are vegetable oils, such as coconut oil or avocado oil, that have been derived from the seeds, kernels, or nuts of plants.

A good place to start diluting is….

12 drops of Essential Oil to 1 fluid oz of Carrier Oil

Using Peppermint for headaches

Apply a few drops of diluted Peppermint Essential Oil to ….

the neck and shoulders

base of the skull

This way you won’t get messy carrier oil in your hair.

Carful don’t rub in your eyes

Add 10 – 15 drops of undiluted Peppermint Essential Oil to a warm bath

Add 1 drop of undiluted Peppermint Oil to a Jewelry diffuser. This is a great way to bring Aromatherapy with you all day long!
